Mystery writer at All Booked Up “All Booked Up" bookstore in historic downtown Apex, will feature Raleigh resident and writer, Margaret Maron on September 26, 2009 at 7:00 pm. Advance purchase of one of her novels at "All Booked Up" is encouraged to attend the "Meet and Greet" prior to the book signing and discussion. Margaert Maron grew up on a farm near Raleigh, but lived in Brooklyn, New York for many years. Returning to her North Carolina roots prompted her to write a series based on her own background, the first of which, Bootlegger’s Daughter, was a Washington Post bestseller and swept the major mystery awards for 1993. West Regional Public Library Young readers age 5 and up--come practice your skills by reading to the See Spot Read organization's trained therapy dogs at the West Regional Public Library in Cary. Dog Days in Holly Springs Dogs and their best friends will gather in Womble Park on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. for food, entertainment and information on adoption. Holly Springs' annual Dog Day in the Park has a new feature this year - a Carolina DockDogs jumping competition that begins during Dog Day and concludes on Sunday. Admission to Dog Day in the Park and the jumping competition is free for spectators and open to everyone. Participants in the competition can register at the event. The Carolina DockDogs competition will run throughout Dog Day on Saturday and resume at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27. Finals are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday. Dog Day in the Park is a family event. Dogs should be friendly and remain on leashes. Local pet care and adoption services will be there. On Friday after 2:30 p.m., dog owners can have their pets jump off the dock into the pool for a $5 donation. Professional handlers will assist. All dogs are welcome. A Midsummer Night’s Dream The Cary Players present “A Midsummer Night's Dream” October 2-4 and 8-10 at 7:30 p.m. at Bond Park's Sertoma Amphitheater (801 High House Road in Cary). American Legion Post 116 Oktoberfest Celebration Everyone’s invited to our 1st Oktoberfest Celebration at the American legion Post 116 at 6400 Johnson Pond Rd in Fuquay-Varina on Saturday, October 10, 2009 starting at 3:30 pm. Come ready to listen to German music and eat some traditional fare. Plan to stay till the food and beer is all gone. A souvenir mug, German music, lots of Brats, Kielbasa and beer will be included in your admission. So, do a little research and dress up in you favorite hat, lederhosen, dermal or fancy Bavarian outfit. If you have any German memorabilia, pictures or memories you want to share bring them along, too! Covered dishes are welcomed, but, they have to be as close to traditional German foods as possible. Limited tickets will be $30.00 per adult and $5.00 per child at the door. Fifty (50) advanced tickets will be available (by cash or credit card) at the Social Quarters at the Post or by phone at 9191-552-0278 for $25.00 per adult and $5.00 per child starting October 1st to make reservations. Hospice to hold class for volunteers Hospice of Wake County will hold a 14-hour training class for new and prospective family support volunteers from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on October 24 and October 31 at the non-profit agency’s Youngsville office, 60 Wheaton Ave, One Park Place Building, Suite 92 in Youngsville. This training will give volunteer candidates an informative overview of the hospice mission and philosophy and will equip them with the skills and confidence to visit patients in their homes, hospital, nursing home, or assisted living facility. Attendance does not obligate participants to continue as volunteers. During the course of the training, attendees can decide if patient care is the appropriate volunteer opportunity for them. Other opportunities exist for administrative support and fundraising volunteers, speakers bureau volunteers, grief companions, and puppeteers.
